how to take a screenshot on ipad

It’s incredibly easy to take a screenshot or screen capture on your iPhone or iPad, then edit and share it with friends. Here’s how, including a method that works on the Home-button-free iPhone XS

On an iPhone X or later

  1. Press and hold the Side button on the right side of your iPhone.
  2. Immediately click the Volume up button on the left side, then release the buttons.
  3. A thumbnail of your screenshot appears in the lower-left corner of your iPhone. Tap the thumbnail to add drawings and text with Markup, or press and hold the thumbnail to share the screenshot. Swipe left on the thumbnail to dismiss it.

On an iPad Pro 11-inch and iPad Pro 12.9-inch

  1. Press and hold the Top button and immediately click the Volume Up button, then release both buttons.
  2. Tap the thumbnail to add drawings and text with Markup, or press and hold the thumbnail to share the screenshot. Swipe left on the thumbnail to dismiss it.

On iPhone 8 or earlier, iPad, and iPod touch

  1. Press and hold the Top or Side button.
  2. Immediately click the Home button, then release the Top or Side buttons.
  3. A thumbnail of your screenshot appears in the lower-left corner of your device. Tap the thumbnail to add drawings and text with Markup, or press and hold the thumbnail to share the screenshot. Swipe left on the thumbnail to dismiss it.

To find the screenshot you just took, along with ones you’ve taken before, go to Photos > Albums and tap Screenshots.

How to take a screenshot silently

If you’ve ever taken a screenshot of something while on a crowded train and then felt embarrassed when the sound of the shutter makes the person opposite think you just took their photo, you might be wondering how to take a shot without making a sound.

To take a screenshot in silence just turn your iPhone or iPad to mute first by sliding the button above the volume control buttons to off. (It should display a red panel.)
